History: After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, forced relocations carried out against Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations. The phrase "Trail of Tears" was used to describe the removal of the Cherokee Nation in 1838. Approximately 2,000-6,000 of the 16,543 relocated Cherokee died along the way.
