History: The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland and Antietam Creek. The Union had 12,410 casualties with 2,108 dead while Confederate casualties were 10,316 with 1,546 dead. This represented 25% of the Federal force and 31% of the Confederate. Overall, both sides lost a combined total of 22,720 casualties in a single day, almost the same amount as had shocked the nation at the 2-day Battle of Shiloh five months earlier.
